How to Play Othello

Rules, Strategy & Tips · 2 players

Othello (also known as Reversi) is a classic strategy board game for two players. Place your discs to outflank and flip your opponent's pieces on an 8x8 board. The player with the most discs when the board is full wins!

Objective

Have more discs of your color on the board when the game ends. The game starts with 4 discs in the center and ends when neither player can make a valid move.

How to Play

  • Black always moves first.
  • Place a disc on an empty square to outflank one or more of your opponent's discs.
  • Outflanking means sandwiching a line of opponent discs between your new disc and an existing disc of your color — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  • All outflanked discs are flipped to your color.
  • You must make a move that flips at least one disc. If you cannot, your turn is skipped.

Game End

  • The game ends when neither player can make a valid move, or the board is completely full.
  • The player with the most discs on the board wins.
  • If both players have equal discs, it's a draw.

Strategy Tips

  • 1Corners are the most valuable positions — corner discs can never be flipped.
  • 2Avoid placing discs on squares diagonally adjacent to empty corners (X-squares) — it gives your opponent the corner.
  • 3Edges are valuable because edge discs are harder to flip.
  • 4Mobility is key — having more available moves gives you control of the game.
  • 5Don't grab too many discs early. Having fewer discs in the early game can be an advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Othello free to play?

Yes, completely free. Play Othello online with friends or AI opponents with no download or sign-up required.

What is the difference between Othello and Reversi?

Othello and Reversi are nearly identical. Othello always starts with a fixed center setup and Black moves first, while Reversi has a slightly different opening. Our version follows Othello rules.

Can I play Othello against AI?

Yes! The AI uses minimax with alpha-beta pruning and positional strategy to provide a challenging opponent.

What happens if I can't make a move?

If you have no valid moves, your turn is automatically skipped. If neither player can move, the game ends and the player with more discs wins.
