About Champulya

Champulya is a traditional board game from Maharashtra, India. Players race their pieces from the starting safe zone around the outer path and then inward to the center WIN cell.

Setup

4 players, each with 4 pieces. Each player starts at one of the four X (safe zone) cells on the edges of the board. The game uses 4 dice.

Rolling Dice

  • Roll 4 dice each turn.
  • Count how many land white side up.
  • 1 white = 1 step, 2 white = 2 steps, 3 white = 3 steps.
  • All white (4) = 4 steps + extra turn!
  • All black (0) = 8 steps + extra turn!

Movement

  • Pieces move anticlockwise around the outer path.
  • Any toss brings a new piece onto the board from your start.
  • Multiple pieces of the same player can share a cell.

Capturing

  • Landing on an opponent's piece sends it back to their start.
  • Pieces on X (safe) cells cannot be captured.

Entering the Inner Path

  • You cannot enter the inner path toward WIN until you have captured at least one opponent's piece.
  • After capturing, your pieces can enter the inner path via the arrows.

Winning

  • You need an exact roll to land on the WIN cell.
  • Getting a piece to WIN grants an extra turn.
  • First player to get all 4 pieces to WIN wins!

Strategy Tips

  • 1Prioritize capturing an opponent's piece early so you can enter the inner path.
  • 2Keep pieces spread out to maximize your options each turn.
  • 3Use safe (X) cells to protect pieces from being captured.
  • 4All-black (0) rolls give 8 steps plus an extra turn — the most powerful roll in the game.
  • 5Plan your moves to land on opponent pieces when possible for captures.
